The Indiana Ice rallied late, but a second period meltdown boosted the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders to a 5-3 victory Friday night from Cedar Rapids Ice Arena in Cedar Rapids, IA. The win puts Cedar Rapids up two games to none in the best-of-five first round playoff series.
For the second consecutive game, the Ice outshot the RoughRiders 34-28, but one bad period proved to be the difference. Indiana outscored Cedar Rapids 3-2 and outshot the RoughRiders 29-13 in the first and third periods of the contest, but the home team recorded three goals in the second period while outshooting Indy 15-5 in the middle frame.
Indy jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 13:17 mark of the first period as Alex Wideman scored after taking passes from Blake Coleman and Shane Berschbach. David Boehm scored late in the frame for Cedar Rapids to make the score 1-1 at the first intermission.
The second period was all RoughRiders as Boehm, Derek DeBlois and Cason Hohmann scored in a span of 8:28 to give Cedar Rapids a 4-1 advantage after two periods of action.
The RoughRiders struck quickly in the third as DeBlois recorded his second of the evening just :27 seconds into the period to extend the home team's lead to 5-1.
The Ice trimmed the deficit to two goals midway through the period on markers from Max Cook and Berschbach. Cook tallied an unassisted power play goal at the 8:11 mark of the period, while Berschbach connected on the power play just about a minute later to make the score 5-3. Anthony Bitetto and Nick Bailen earned assists on Berschbach's goal.
Troy Grosenick was the winning goaltender as he stopped 31 shots, while Cab Morris turned back 23 shots in defeat for Indy.
The Ice hope to stave off elimination when the series shifts to Indianapolis tonight for game three at 7:05 p.m. from the Indiana/World Skating Academy at Pan Am Plaza.
